She's a lover of language, although secretly she prefers to just take pictures of her son all day long. But when not taking snaps, Charlotte is a very happy Content Marketing Manager, with her experience making her an important pivot in the Speakap marketing team.
Where are you from?
I was born in Hilversum, in the Netherlands. Although I didn't live there for long: when I was one and a half, we moved to Veldhoven (near Eindhoven). I lived there until I was 25. During my HBO study, I spent six months in Cape Town, South Africa. Then I moved to Amsterdam for six years while studying at the University of Amsterdam. I now live in Haarlem. I intend to stay there!
What do you do at Speakap?
The thing I like most: content marketing! Concepting and creating content for our (potential) customers to show them how an internal communication platform increases the involvement in your organisation and increases the customer experience. It's the combination of the product that Speakap develops and being fully focused on creating content about internal communications that makes me happy.
Why content marketing?
Writing and 'managing content' is something that comes naturally to me. Privately, I am always writing down life lessons that I would like to pass on to my son and to the rest of the world. I think that it's better to reflect on your life choices at the time than to think about what you would have wanted to do differently 'at the end'. For example, I'm working on a (second) photo album about my son at the moment.
What does your ideal working week look like?
Starting with our weekly planning, I split up my work in to days. Then, at the end of each day, I review how it has gone and I update the plan if necessary. In my ideal working week I write beautiful texts, which I then put online and watch as they do very well in terms of visits and reach through the social posts and newsletter. On top of that, over lunch and during the weekly meetings between colleagues, I get to hear about other people who've talked enthusiastically about this content. At the end of the ideal work week, I've checked off all my planned activities.
What are you proud of?
That I started at the Mavo level and then did MBO, HBO and University. And I worked my way through all programs nominally. I think people have to make study choices far too young. For this reason, I think that a lot of talent in the Netherlands does not get the right opportunity. Sometimes it just takes a little longer before someone sees what they stand for and are good at. And besides, I am proud of the fact that I can now do a job that makes me happy. That the long road has translated into work I am proud of!
Where would you like to develop further?
I really want to leave my mark on the world. Life is short and it's important to me that I contribute my part. In terms of development, it means that I think about ways I can turn my qualities and the lessons I've learned into something that adds value in a longer timeframe than just my lifetime.
Working at Speakap in 3 words:
Positive, pragmatic, focused-on-long-term!
What are your passions?
Thinking of new ways to look at reality. After all, what is reality? The way I see something does not have to be the right way. And the way in which theories and models are designed is, in my view, not always 'how something should be'. It is up to us to redefine and refocus the world time and again. It fascinates me to see how different people organise their lives according to their reality.
What are your guilty pleasures?
Gardening on Sunday mornings. (Very) many pictures of my son. TLC series, such as Counting On and Sister Wives. Examining texts that I encounter for typos before I take them seriously. Googling endlessly in the evenings about topics that I find interesting, such as interior design in our home and construction projects in our hometown. Going to the thrift store to buy children's clothing for a good price. Not thinking about anything at all... just how leaves rustle on the trees and the water surface circles in the wind.
What don't most people know about you?
When I was 16, I won a modelling competition and went (alone) to Milan to discover whether the international modelling world was something for me. It was just like Holland's Next Top Model, but without cameras. I lost 15 kilos in half a year because I wanted to win. I was in the gym five times a week and I ate a maximum of 1000 calories per day..
In the end, it didn't work out, which is good too as that lifestyle is not healthy. But the experience in Milan changed me from an insecure girl to a self-confident lady.
Next vacation destination?
Tenerife: our first flying vacation as a family.
What do your Sundays look like?
We like to spontaneously come up with fun outings, like a nice walk or going to the beach. And, in the meantime, I take more pictures of my 8-month-old son! I copy those photos to the external hard drive at night: I work on a photo album about his life. I also like drinking in a cafe and then enjoying a glass of wine at home while my husband is cooking for us!
Which song starts your weekends?
Coldplay - Adventures of a Lifetime.
