[Video] How We Built A Company Culture That We Love

July 19, 2018 - 3 minute read

At the risk of sounding like we’re tooting our own horn, the past six months here at Speakap have been truly amazing.

  • have doubled in headcount, and consequently doubled in office space
  • launched our sixth office in London, and we’re about to launch in New York (you know, the place where big dreams are made of!)
  • have grown into a truly global organization, with employees that come from all over the world
  • were honored to receive the ACG Holland Innovation Award 2018
  • continued to make over 300 clients and their users happy. Every. Single. Day!

From the very beginning, we knew that we didn’t just have a vision to build a special product… we also had a special group of people to build it. We always fostered a collaborative team environment, with leaders who encouraged us to try new things and find new ways of working. Because, after all, that is essentially what Speakap is - a new way of working.

But despite having awesome people, did we have a company culture, so to speak?

Before January 2018, Speakap didn’t actually have a HR department. The onboarding of our CHRO, Annelies den Boer, was the start of an exciting new phase for Speakap employees. No, having a HR department didn’t just mean our holiday leave was being approved quicker; Annelies begun an exciting project to help the people of Speakap to connect, by endeavouring to define a clear overview of our company culture.

Although we’re all a nice bunch of people who like to get along, this was no easy task. Our workforce is multicultural; which means both interesting conversations at the lunch table, but also different cultural values when it comes to business practices. Different communication styles can already be sometimes difficult to navigate, so it was important for the growth of our company culture that everyone felt they were heard and understood.

If you have employees, culture will - to a degree - naturally form based on your people's own values and culture. Workplace culture isn’t something that’s built from scratch or can be decreed from the top down, so you need people to help identify and shape what the company culture looks like and how it can be reinforced. This way, everyone is aware of exactly what values are internally shared and the desired behaviours of working within the team.

Annelies and her dedicated culture crew team worked together over the past few months to identify, define and share the values of Speakap employees, and off the back of this work we have created this employee branding video to share with the world what being apart of Speakap is all about.

And without further adieu, we present ”Just another generic company” for your viewing pleasure!
